Cleaning My Past: A 1991 Poem and Decluttering Treasured Memories

In this video, I share a quiet morning project: decluttering a long-held family TV cabinet. As I sort through the items, I reflect on the weight and heaviness of accumulating things that gather dust but also hold deep memories.

The journey begins with a look through various wedding and engagement presents, such as a cherished cake plate and pieces from my mother, as I consider whether these objects still align with my shift toward minimalism. I also uncover several family treasures, including a road map that belonged to my father, a bell from my mother’s teaching days, and a beautiful copper rose jewellery box she crafted during her college years.

I revisit personal milestones through a ballet certificate from my teenage years and a nautilus shell found during my 2001 honeymoon at South Molle Island. To conclude this reflection, I read an original poem titled “Dusty,” which I wrote at fifteen. It is a sweet, innocent piece that captures the struggle of a young girl trying to find her courage as she faces a dusty world.
