Maintaining the Balance in Children’s Health

My Reflections on Children’s Health: Empathy and Balance

This article was originally published on the Celestine Vision website, February 2018.

I found myself waiting in the doctors’ clinic recently, which is often a challenging experience, but one we can’t always avoid. My son had coughed so much through the night I wanted to get him checked over to see if his lungs were clear. Thankfully, the doctor said, “It’s was one of your run of the mill, no name viruses. It’s going around everywhere and rest is really the best medicine.”

My son, being an empath like me, senses stress and imbalance more than a lot of adults I know. In this particular instance, his dad was sick and rundown, as well as stressed from work, so it’s no wonder he caught the same ‘bug’.

Our energy fields are sensitive to those around us and when our vibration is affected by negative energy it knocks the natural harmony of our system out of balance. As a result, we sometimes ‘pick up’ illnesses, which are of the lower vibration.

Understanding and Supporting Growing Bodies

As adults, we often look at bacteria as the enemy, something to fight off, resist, or kill. Yet, our bodies are made up of billions of bacteria. Yes, we are all aware of the impact and seriousness of some illnesses. There is no escaping the fact that some diseases are life-threatening and need to be treated. However, most of us are also aware that prevention is better than a cure. Children’s immune systems are conditioning themselves to a world of viruses and bacteria, and as a result, they are often sick for several months of the year. Especially if they attend daycare or school.

A large number of health problems stem from the gut, the place where we digest and create all the energy that our bodies need to function healthily. Where once probiotics and prebiotics could only be purchased from naturopaths and health food stores, they are now able to be purchased in most pharmacies. Pharmacists are now well aware of the benefits of supporting the balance of good bacteria in our bodies. There is no denying the power of restoring harmony within the gut to help repair the imbalance created from the use of antibiotics, the effects of ill-health, and the experience of long-term stress.

Prebiotic foods are beneficial for supporting the gut as well. Sauerkraut, cultured vegetables, and natural healing remedies that have been used for centuries such as kefir and kombucha are readily available from supermarkets. As the general public becomes more informed about the benefits of these superfoods, these products become more affordable; it is the simple equation of supply and demand.

So, what can we do?

The key to good health and wellbeing is finding the balance within this complex system. We can nourish our children with simple steps such as:

  • using essential oils
  • drinking plenty of water
  • feeding a healthy diet
  • offering extra immune support in the form of supplements and probiotics
  • making sure children get adequate rest

Having access to a good naturopath can also help if advice is needed on what herbal medicine to give our children to support the healing process. It is also important to check the newest research in integrative medicine, especially relating to healthy diets. Check out the new Ketone Dietary approach being popularized by Dr. Mercola at mercola.com, for instance.

Another essential ingredient in any situation is positive, loving energy to help us thrive and restore balance. The power of prayer, meditation, and projecting our positive energy is as vital to our children’s wellbeing as a cup of chicken soup…soul food!

Ignorance Is Not Bliss When It Comes To Our Health

I happily label myself a ‘numbers watcher’. This used to be scoffed at, and it wasn’t always easy to refuse certain foods at a friends place. And I can understand that; not everyone is comfortable with knowing the ingredient list of their favourite convenience food. But when we educate ourselves on what we are consuming and play a part in what our families are consuming, we create the expectation of better. We raise the standards for the governing bodies that make decisions about how food is regulated. The current laws on labelling are still far too general and it is up to us to work on ways to reduce the frequency with which the public is deceived.

Learning what numbers, preservatives, additives, and enhancers can do to our bodies and how they can affect the behaviour of our children is a choice we can make. We can’t afford to be complacent anymore. Science too often interferes with the natural laws of food but, if we let producers know that there is a higher demand for non-genetically modified, organically grown foods, they will rise to meet the public’s needs.

My children see that their friends are allowed to have certain foods in their lunch boxes, but they also know that there are healthier choices. While their diets are not restricted to the point where they can’t have any treats, they know that making healthy choices the majority of the time is something that benefits our bodies in the long run. I teach them from the experience of having had my share of gut sensitivities that by tuning in to our bodies, we will be guided to consume what we need, and this helps us to know our limits, listen to our own inner wisdom, and make better choices.
